4 Deaths from Hydrogen Sulfide Poisoning! Guangdong Jieyang's "July 4" Major Poisoning Accident Placed Under Listed Supervision!
On July 4, a poisoning accident occurred at Juxiangyuan Preserved Fruit Factory in Fengjiang Town, Jiexi County, Jieyang City, Guangdong Province, resulting in 4 deaths. The Office of the Work Safety Committee of Guangdong Province has placed the investigation and handling of the accident under listed supervision.
At noon on July 4, 2023, a hydrogen sulfide gas leak occurred at Juxiangyuan Food Factory in Jiexi County during the shutdown period, causing an accidental poisoning and asphyxiation incident. After the accident, provincial, municipal and county authorities attached great importance to it and quickly set up an accident investigation team to carry out the investigation.
Preliminary investigation shows that hydrogen sulfide gas leaked from a damaged part of the connecting pipe between an old spray tower and a hydrolytic acidification tank. It spread to the warehouse through the door next to the tank, causing one person in the warehouse to suffer accidental poisoning and asphyxiation. During the subsequent rescue process, 5 more rescuers were poisoned due to lack of rescue knowledge. Eventually, the accident resulted in 4 deaths from hydrogen sulfide poisoning and asphyxiation, and 2 rescuers were hospitalized for observation. At present, the observed personnel have been discharged from the hospital. Relevant aftermath and follow-up disposal work is still in progress.
Case 1
A poisoning and asphyxiation accident occurred during maintenance operations in the wastewater treatment room of Furong Bamboo Shoot Food Factory in Shuanghe Town, Changning County, Yibin City, Sichuan Province, resulting in 7 deaths and 1 injury. On-site personnel inhaled toxic and harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide, leading to poisoning and asphyxiation death.
Case 2
One employee of Minong Flour Products Co., Ltd. in Jiaozuo City, Henan Province accidentally fell into a material tank while working, inhaled sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide and died of poisoning. Another 5 employees were also poisoned to death due to improper rescue and disposal. The accident caused a total of 6 deaths.
Hydrogen sulfide is colorless and has a strong smell of rotten eggs. It is heavier than air and tends to accumulate in low-lying areas. So how can we prevent hydrogen sulfide poisoning in safe production? In addition to identifying key hydrogen sulfide protection areas and key protection operation links, fixed hydrogen sulfide detection and alarm instruments should be installed in workplaces where hydrogen sulfide leakage may occur. The display and alarm panel should be set in the control room, and the number and location of on-site hydrogen sulfide detection probes should be arranged in accordance with relevant specifications.
Fixed Reflective Laser Gas Telemetry Instrument

Hanhai Optoelectronics' fixed reflective laser gas telemetry instrument integrates transmission and reception, with a maximum detection distance of 1 kilometer. Different from the passive waiting of traditional detection modes, it actively monitors leak risk points. With a response time of only 1 second, it can accurately detect trace leaks at the ppm level, truly realizing preventive monitoring of gas leaks. Compared with traditional detectors that are easily interfered by environmental factors and cross gases, it has strong anti-interference ability. It adopts fingerprint detection, achieving true zero false alarms. The product requires no calibration, saving operating costs throughout its life cycle. In addition to hydrogen sulfide, it can also detect various gases such as methane, ethylene, acetylene, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and ammonia. It complies with the national standard GB/T 50493-2019.
